Boys Soccer Coach Perspective
My 15 years of coaching youth and high school soccer, and my travel to many U.S. soccer communities has provided me with practical knowledge of how good turf fields are for soccer games and practices. Currently, West Potomac High School does not have turf, and it has created an uneven playing field for our student athletes.
Five years ago, due to heavy rain and thunderstorms, our soccer program had to cancel and reschedule district playoff games and our regional tournament match. While a majority of the other schools in our district had turf fields or were able to play on a turf field during the tournament, West Potomac was not able to do so, and it truly hurt our team. West Potomac High School has lost numerous home games and has had to move matches to the opponent’s field that had turf. Further, due to games being cancelled, we have been required to play back to back matches against opponents who did not. As we all know, rest and preparation for a game is key, and playing back to back matches does not allow this.
For numerous years, the boys soccer team at West Potomac has been practicing on a grass field full of holes, dirt, and gravel – and if it rains the field is a swamp. We are not asking for much, just the opportunity to level the playing field.
The benefits of a turf field at West Potomac would allow our community to re-connect with the school by participating in athletic events at West Potomac and more importantly it would allow our student athletes to be proud of the schools playing fields and facilities.
On behalf of the West Potomac Boys Soccer Team- PLEASE help us reach our goal for TURF!
