West Potomac Alumni Athlete talks turf
I played on the West Potomac soccer team last year and we had so much talent and so much of it went to waste due to horrible training. It wasn't the coach's fault, but the ground at Quander Road school is pretty much composed of miniature mountains made of maybe half dust half grass. We had to practice on a field where there's a 50% chance that you'll make contact with the ball if you try to kick it. If we had practiced on a normal surface, like turf, we probably would have made it much farther.
As for our games, the wolverine stadium is just a less extreme version of our practice field, still horrible for soccer. It gets ripped up by the end of football season just in time for the soccer ball to jump in random directions during our games. No one shows up to the soccer games not because we are bad or they don't like us, but because our field forces us to play a game of chaotic kick ball rather than soccer since the ball can't stay on the ground due to the horrid terrain.
A turf field would first, give us a place to train. Second, make us better since we could actually play soccer and practice on a nice surface. And third, people might actually come to our games since the field would let us actually play soccer rather than kickball.
